Libro I Título III. Deberes de los niños, niñas y adolescentes

To the extent of their faculties, every boy, girl and adolescent shall be subject only to the limitations established by law, with the sole purpose of ensuring recognition of and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of satisfying the just requirements of morals, public order and general welfare in a democratic society.

For their integral development, boys, girls and adolescents, to the extent of their capacities, have the following duties:

a)To develop attitudes of consideration, solidarity, tolerance, understanding and respect toward elderly persons, adults, adolescents and other boys and girls, without distinction as to family ties, sex, economic and social position, ethnicity and physical, mental or sensory disability.

b)To respect and obey their parents, guardians or caretakers, contributing to family unity and loyalty.

c)To support their parents in their old age, disability or illness, to the extent of their possibilities.

d)To learn the national reality, to cultivate cultural identity, the values of Guatemalan nationality and patriotism.

e)To act with honesty and responsibility in the home and in all stages of the educational process.

f)To strive to assimilate the knowledge imparted to them and to endeavor to develop the skills necessary to achieve adequate school performance.

g)To comply with the disciplinary provisions established in the school where they pursue their studies, provided they are administered in a manner compatible with their dignity and do not contravene this Law or the laws of the country.

h)To participate in school and community activities.

i)To care for and respect their property, that of their family, that of their educational center and that of the community, participating in its maintenance and improvement.

j)To collaborate in household tasks, provided they are appropriate to their age and physical development and do not interfere with their educational activities and integral development.

k)To comply with medical, social, psychological or other treatments necessary for their well-being.

l)To participate with respect and honesty in cultural, sports or recreational activities organized by public or private institutions.

m)To learn and promote the Political Constitution of the Republic, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and human rights in general.

n)To seek protection from their parents or caretakers or from the competent authorities against any act that infringes their rights.

o)To respect, foster and collaborate in the conservation of the environment.

p)Not to leave the home of their parents or that which they or the authority may have assigned to them, without due authorization from them, except when their physical and mental integrity is at grave risk of suffering some type of harm.
